Panty Fit Guide

Panty Fit Advice & Sizing Made Simple

The right panties can make every outfit look and feel better. Explore this guide to learn how to find your perfect fit, measure correctly, and choose the best styles for your shape.

Panty Sizing

Let's be honest. If your underwear doesn't fit right, you're going to be miserable all day. The dreaded panty ride-up situation can affect your comfort level and become a day-long distraction.

So, it goes without saying that panties need to fit your contours without creeping up. They need to feel natural and fit well if you don't want to spend all day tugging and squirming. If you never want to experience the feeling of discomfort that goes along with wearing ill-fitting underwear, the solution is simple: purchase the size that's right for you.

Waist Measurement

Get the right fit the first time. Measure your waist by wrapping the tape measure around the natural indentation or break in your waist. If you're not sure how to find your natural break, bend to the side. The crease will be where you need to measure.

Hip Measurement

Measure the fullest part of your hips, making sure the tape measure remains parallel to the floor. This is your hip measurement.

Panty Fit Checklist

Natural Fitting Crotch

A panty crotch should fit naturally against your body. There should be no excessive fabric in the front or back, and should definitely not be binding. If your panty has a front horizontal crotch seam, it should not be visible from the front and not slip backwards. If it does, check to see that your panty isn't on backwards.

Checkmark icon

Waistband Is Snug but Not Binding

If your waistband keeps bunching up and rolling over in front, you have the wrong size. Try a smaller size. The right size means your band stays in place and is comfortable.

Checkmark icon

Legs Are Snug but Not Binding

Panty legs should not be so tight that they cause grooves along your thighs. Leg openings should be evenly arched on both legs and the fabric should not be bunched or twisted. If you are still having trouble with binding legs, try a panty with a high cut leg style such as French cut.

Checkmark icon

Buttocks Is Cupped

Assuming you are not wearing a thong or the current cheeky panty styles, the proper fit around the buttocks is balanced, symmetrical, covered, and cupped. If not, you need a bigger size. Also, if some of your current panties are riding up, the elastic is probably shot and they need to be replaced.

International Panty Sizing

International panty size measurement systems vary. Do you know your bottom type and your panty size? Before shopping for new styles, it’s important to understand both your measurements and which cuts flatter your shape best.

The Best Underwear Styles for Different Body Types

The Best Panty Styles for Your Bottom Type

Discover panty styles for every body type with tips on choosing the most flattering and comfortable fit.

Panties today come in many styles with several features. So, what are the best styles for your bottom type?

Here's some help. First, a quick run-through of panty silhouettes. Starting with the most coverage, there are women's briefs. They sit at your natural waist just below your navel. Their leg openings follow the natural bend of your upper thigh, then around and under your back cheeks giving you complete back coverage that can look invisible under clothing.

High-cut briefs, also called French cut, have a larger and higher cut leg for a more flattering look. High-cut briefs with side seams positioned more forward near the center front leg will also provide full back coverage. Without these seams, the back coverage is reduced.

Boyshorts have a lower mid-rise waist and come with a squared-cut leg that falls below your back cheeks. The leg edges usually have no treatment, so can easily stretch while staying almost invisible under form-fitting clothes.

Hipsters are briefs with a lower waistline to hide under today's lower rise pants.

Bikinis have a waistline lower than a hipster and a slightly higher cut leg, creating moderate back coverage and thinner sides.

Tanga styles fall between a bikini and a thong. The legs are cut to create a 45-degree angle across the back cheeks. Thongs have minimal sides and no back coverage. They sit low on the waist and may feature a back “whale tail” design.

Women’s bottoms come in several shapes, and there are specific solutions for each to get a perfect and comfortable fit.

Flat or Minimal Bottoms

Avoid panties with hi-cut legs. Without sufficient back flesh, this style tends to ride up, creating wedgies. Also avoid gathering along the back leg edges, which will create puckering. Instead, opt for cheeky back coverage to give the illusion of more shape. Boyshorts and bikinis are good options, as are tangas and thongs. HerRoom also offers padded panties if you’d like to add more size to your backside.

Sagging or Low-Hanging Bottoms

Avoid silhouettes with less back coverage—low bottoms will hang out, creating horizontal panty lines. Steer clear of hi-cut styles, which rarely give enough back coverage. Instead, choose briefs, boyshorts, hipsters, or bikinis without hi-cut sides. Their leg openings tuck under your cheeks and can even help lift them. Shapewear lifting panties are also available. Thongs can be worn, but they won’t provide support.

“Bubble Bottoms” (Full and Round)

These bottoms need more fabric in back. Otherwise, the panty front will pull down and the fit will feel unfinished. High-cut leg panties won’t work and may creep inward. Consider going up a size for more coverage. Panties with a center back seam contour better, preventing the “uni-bottom” look. Some even feature ruching, which flatters this shape. Tangas give a sexy silhouette, boyshorts provide great coverage, and panties with 4-way stretch allow for a custom fit. Thongs always fit since there’s no back.

Full Thighs and Full Bottoms

Look for panties with hi-cut leg openings, which are larger and less binding. Avoid panties with elastic sewn along leg edges—these can dig in. Instead, try stretchy lace or seamless laser-cut finishes. Full coverage panties may make your bottom appear bigger, so boyshorts, bikinis, and tangas give a cheeky, slimming effect. The best-fitting thongs will have a V-shape center front.

Final Points

Full-cut briefs remain one of the most comfortable silhouettes, perfect under skirts. Modern versions use stretch lace and design details, and many include tummy control.

Workout panties now exist, made from performance fabrics that wick moisture and provide support under leggings and shorts.

New fabrics with moisture-wicking and breathability make all-cotton panties less necessary. Most panties today include cotton crotch linings, and if they don’t, HerRoom notes it clearly.

The biggest mistake women make is how they put panties on. They pull them up like pants, which sets the waistband too high. Instead, place them carefully: the waistband should rest where designed, and the back should sit properly. The same applies to thongs. When worn correctly, discomfort and adjusting disappear.

How to Put Panties on the Right Way

How to Properly Put On Panties

Most women are surprised to learn there’s a right way to put on panties. Done correctly, they not only feel better, but they also disappear under clothes.

You may be asking: Why do I need to watch a video on how to put on panties? Well, I think you'll be surprised at what you're about to learn.

Common Mistakes Women Make When Putting On Panties

Women generally put their panties and thongs on like pants, which results in pulling them up too high. Instead, panties should be gently placed on your body.

Correct Waistband & Leg Placement

The waistband should sit in the proper location, and the back of the leg opening should be tucked under your cheeks. Forgetting this step is the number one cause of visible panty lines showing through your clothes.

How to Wear Thongs Comfortably

Women also pull their thongs up too high. Most thongs are designed with a waistband that sits lower than the waist. In the correct, lower position, the dreaded floss feeling goes away, and your thong will actually feel comfortable.

Checking Panty Placement

With your panties positioned properly, you need to take care when pulling up your pants or leggings. The back of your panties can be dragged out of place, so once your outerwear is pulled up, reach in and make sure the back of your panty is still tucked under your cheeks before closing up your pants. Throughout the day, we pull our panties and thongs up and down for bathroom breaks. Afterwards, take a second to check and adjust the back of your panty again. It quickly becomes a habit after doing it a few times. After sitting for a long time, it’s likely that the back of your panty may need a quick downward adjustment. Upon standing, do a subtle check. If people are around, turn your back and discreetly make a pant adjustment through your clothing, or step into a private space for a full realignment.

When It’s Time for New Panties

If you find your panties are always coming out of place, this is a sure sign the elastic is shot or your panty size is too large. Either way, it’s time for a new pair.

Every woman should have a one to two week supply of everyday panties. They can be any style as long as they are comfortable and non-binding. Once the elastic is shot, they look dingy, or they become stretched out and no longer stay in place, they should be replaced.

Bikini

Tyra Banks once said that when she gained some weight, she noticed that the skimpier the bathing suit bottom, the thinner she looked. This style has a waistband that rests below the navel and usually has a high-cut leg line and back coverage. The bikini panty style is not just for the young—try one and see if you like their fit, feel, and look.

Boyshort

The boyshort style has quickly become the new panty silhouette. It’s replacing the thong because it’s more comfortable, yet doesn’t show obvious panty lines. It’s also a cute solution under skirts—if someone sees them, they look like hotpants. Look for a gusset crotch design to minimize ride-up.

Brief

Briefs are the “comfort food” of lingerie. When you want to be comfortable and avoid panty lines, briefs are your best friend. Many also come with hi-cut legs for a sexier look should you be “caught” wearing a pair.

Thong

A thong is a bikini panty with a high-cut leg and a 1/2"–1" strip of material running up the back. Many women find this more comfortable than a g-string. Best of all, it eliminates visible panty lines.

Shapewear Panties

Shapewear panties come in silhouettes from briefs to thongs, usually with a high waistband. Offered in control levels from light to extra firm, they slim where needed while doubling as panties. Many use 4-way stretch fabrics, some with derriere-lifting designs.

Final Thought

Do a Routine Quality Check

It's easy to keep the same panties for years without thinking about tossing them out or replacing them. After all, they're covered up most of the time and you're often the only one who sees them. However, it's always a good idea to take a look at your current panty wardrobe to check for worn out panties.

If you notice legs or waistbands that are stretched out, backs that continually ride up on you, or frayed material, it's probably time to throw them out.
