Reebok began in 1895 when Joseph William Foster made a running shoe with spikes. His company, J.W. Foster and Sons, began to grow as athletes flocked to run faster in these shoes. They were even the first running shoes worn in the 1924 Summer Games. In 1958, Foster's grandsons turned this company into Reebok, named after the African gazelle. The shoes were seen in the UK in the late 1970s by a sports distributor, and quickly began selling in North America. In the late 1990s Reebok grew from a company identified mainly in the track world of sports to a company focused on all sports. The motto of Reebok basically became to be yourself in your sport and show your individuality. Reebok has grown to encompass all sports and sponsor some of the top athletes in the world, and even many celebrities, the first being Jay Z. Reebok has joined with many charities as well as many programs designed for health and fitness. Reebok has rights to manufacture apparel for the NFL and the CFL, as well as the NHL. Reebok is also the official shoe supplier to the MLB. One of the biggest movements to this date, CrossFit formed an alliance with Reebok in 2011. Reebok is known throughout the globe for their movement toward health and fitness, as well as their fashionable, comfortable athletic wear.
