Berlei was founded in 1917 by Fred Burley, a clothing entrepreneur whose mission statement was to produce superior fitting under-fashions, and deliver excellent customer service. Showing visionary genius, he conducted marketing research to identify basic figure types so that corsets could be manufactured in a more efficient, "made to order" way. In 1929, Burlei UK was started, with offices in London, England. Staff members were trained intensively, and products were soon sold in Paris, France, garnering praise from Vogue magazine.
In the 1950's, Burlei instituted the first approved design for a maternity bra, which was designed with the help of the medical profession. Its launching was immediately successful. The 1980's brought the development of the minimizer bra. The 1990's saw the Shock Absorber sports bra collection, endorsed by athlete Sally Gunnell. In 1999, the "Undercover" documentary highlighted Fred Burley's life and the Berlei lingerie line. More recently, bras have been designed especially for the equestrian set. A vigorous trot tends to put a great deal of stress on breast tissue if not well supported.
Berlei lingerie honors women in all the stages of their lives, making designs practical, stylish and perfect for every day wear. Quality is always uppermost, with fabric and trims chosen to deliver a fine quality product.
