| Boardshorts were designed specifically for surfing, with features that are highly functional. They are made of fabric that is durable enough for the sport and quick-drying. Original board shorts had longer legs than typical swimwear to protect the sulfur's legs from wax. A classic feature of board shorts is the rigid waistband and velcro closure, usually with lace-up ties. The popularity of board shorts has exploded and they're not just for surfing anymore. There are board short styles to suit every activity, even just working on your tan. Some have added a drawstring waist that can be cinched tightly for perfect fit. Boardshorts also incorporate pockets, whether on seam hip pockets or handy cargo pockets. Unlike the original design, recent board short styles also now have mesh brief liners liners. The velcro closure is still popular but there are some advances in closure styles, including stretch panels across the interior of the fly, which provide support and avoids some of the tangling problems of unlined shorts with velcro.
