Undershirts, T-Shirts & Bottoms

It's not just about boxers or briefs anymore. Specific underwear styles work best with certain clothing styles, making you more comfortable and confident in the way you dress. Here's a list of underwear essentials that will have you covered for any occasion.

Undershirts

Crew Neck Undershirt

Crew Neck Undershirts

A man should have 3-6 basic white 100% cotton crewneck undershirts. These undershirts are worn under dress shirts to control perspiration and hide body hair. They should be form-fitting and fairly thin so as not to cause extra bulk, make you hot, or compete with the outer shirt. These undershirts are not worn as outerwear.

V-Neck Undershirts

V-Neck Undershirts

White 100% cotton V-neck undershirts are worn under a dress shirt when you don't button the top button. Figure on 3-6 of these in your wardrobe. If you work in a casual office setting, you may need even more. Again, these undershirts are not worn as outerwear.

Tank Top Undershirts

Tank Top Undershirts

A tank top undershirt in 100% white cotton is the undershirt to wear during summer months to help keep you cool. Again, this style undershirt should be thin and form fitting. It is not an outerwear piece. If you perspire heavily, this undershirt style will probably not work for you.

Sleeveless or Muscle Undershirts

Sleeveless or Muscle Undershirts

This style undershirt has become popular to wear as outerwear at the gym or as loungewear. If you don't like the look of a short sleeve t-shirt showing through your dress shirt, this style in 100% white cotton works beautifully. It's probably the most hidden undershirt silhouette you can wear under a dress shirt.

T-Shirts

Crewneck T-Shirts

If a t-shirt is one of your standard outerwear shirts, you need to invest in several quality t-shirts - not freebies given out at car-wash openings (they're never of quality, always fit poorly, and usually have polyester in them). The perfect fitting crewneck t-shirt is the James Dean look - form-fitting cap sleeves that come to mid-biceps, form-fitting across the chest, straight line down to the waist, with the length no more than 3" below your belt line.

At the gym, this is the style t-shirt you should wear if you don't want sleeves. It's figure flattering and manages perspiration well. This is also a very comfortable style to lounge in.

V-neck T-Shirts

If you prefer to wear a v-neck as outerwear, keep a few things in mind. The 1" below-the-clavicle v-neck is the standard for V-neck undershirt styles. Lower V-necks are considered more fashionable for outerwear.

Bottoms

Boxers

Boxers

A man remembers his first pair of boxers - it's truly a coming-of-age moment in a man's life. Boxers look good on all physiques, can be large and thus camouflage a man's physique, and are socially acceptable to be seen in...sort of. For all these reasons, a man should have at least a few in his wardrobe.

Briefs

Briefs

Briefs should be in every man's underwear wardrobe for several reasons. Briefs give great freedom of movement, don't bunch up under pants, and provide support. Additionally, with today's lower rise styles, the lower briefs won't pop out above your waistline. Even boxer wearers should keep a couple pairs of briefs around for those times when they'll work best with what you're wearing. Avoid white. Black and gray will always look better on you.

Boxer Briefs

Boxer Briefs

A boxer brief is really the best of both. They give support, look good on most men, and don't bind. Again, this style is most flattering in black and colors.

Trunks

Trunks

The trunk style is the latest silhouette in men's underwear. It's really a boxer brief but with a shorter inseam. If you have issues with your boxer brief leg constantly riding up, a trunk will give you all the features and advantages of a boxer brief, but with a shorter leg.

Thongs

Thongs

This is a personal preference. But, you should have just one for the fun of it, and to give the love in your life a little shock.
