| As any guy who surfs, body surfs or does any kind of high-action aquatic sports knows, the construction of the swimwear fly is basic to comfort, access and security. Board shorts were typically designed with no brief liner and a velcro fly, which caused some tangling issues. Technology and fashion combine to create new fly options for the ever-popular boardshorts. Some styles still use the velcro front closure, which stays closed but is easily opened. Other styles have a stretch panel (often neoprene) across the inside of the fly, eliminating those tangling problems and also providing some secure support. Other closure designs include zipper closures, hook-and-loop styles and even button closures. New fly designs don't sacrifice the typical board short construction. Even the most functional fly-front board shorts have the classic rigid waistband construction, usually with ties at the front. Some also incorporate mesh brief liners for support and comfort. Boardshorts typically have a cargo pocket with a securely closing flap, often just big enough for a key. Lengths vary, although the old-school style is to mid-thigh. Today there are even board shorts that hit below the knee. |
